About BagpipeLesson.com
BagpipeLesson.com was created to make bagpipe instruction freely available on the internet. Learning the Great Highland Bagpipe is not easy, and access to good instruction has traditionally required finding a local pipe band or paying for private lessons — neither of which is possible for everyone.
The goal of this site is simple: to give learners a structured set of lessons they can work through on their own, at their own pace, without spending money. The lessons cover everything from holding a practice chanter for the first time to playing tunes with complex embellishments.
How the Lessons Are Organized
The site is divided into several sections:
- Beginner / Novice / Intermediate — graded curricula that take you through the instrument step by step.
- Embellishments — detailed pages on each individual ornament used in bagpipe music.
- Music Theory — how to read and understand bagpipe notation.
- Practice Chanter & Reed — care and technique for your practice instrument.
- Sheet Music — note sequences and guidance for a number of well-known bagpipe tunes.
A Note on Self-Teaching
Joining a pipe band and learning under an experienced instructor is genuinely the best way to learn the bagpipe. However, that is not always possible. If you use this site, please try to attend pipe band events and competitions whenever you can, and listen carefully to recordings of accomplished pipers. Your ears are just as important as your fingers.
